Paul says that the greater gifts are those which are listed first, in his list, wherein he writes, “first … second … third … then …” as if to imply a hierarchy of their appearance relating to spreading the gospel and setting up the church. Then in chapter 13 he writes that all gifts cease except for faith, hope, and love.

Paul even writes in 1 Corinthians 14:38 that if someone doubts these guidelines they shouldn’t be recognized in the church.
